Robert Jones
We cannot be certain when or where ROBERT JONES was born, but marriage
records show that he married Joanna Osgood, daughter of William and Elizabeth
Osgood, in 1658/9 in Amesbury, MA. He was granted a "township" in Amesbury in
1666 and "children's land" in 1667 for his son. He was assigned "common
rights" in 1667; and both he and "Goodwife Jones" were granted meeting house
seats that same year. He was a Prudential man (juror) in 1666 in Amesbury.
Robert Jones, who called himself "husbandman," served in King Phillip's
War at Falls Fight in 1676. He signed a petition in 1680, and was appointed
to the Peeke Land Commission in 1682.
Robert and Joanna (Osgood) Jones were parents of eight children:
William, born 12 April 1659; Robert, born 17 September 1660; Elizabeth, born
24 December 1661; Joseph, born 7 October 1664; Mary, born 15 May 1667;
Hannah, born 17 August 1688; Samuel, born 12 May 1675; and Jonathan, born
about 1677. The births of their children are listed sometimes in Amesbury and
sometimes in Salisbury, but Jonathan's birth is listed in neither town.
However, we can be certain that Jonathan was a son because in a deed dated 31
March 1708, Robert Jones calls Jonathan Jones "my son." (See Bk. 20 PP
184-186 Essex Registry of MA, South District, Salem, MA)
William Jones, the eldest son, was a member of the Amesbury "training
band" in 1680. He married Mary first and Rachel second, and seems to have had
no children. William deeded land to his brother Jonathan in 1708. Little is
known about Robert, Jr., except that he was living in 1690.
Elizabeth Jones, the first daughter, married Sam Getchell 17 November
1679, and married second, John Flanders. Another daughter, Hannah, died
young. Only Mary's birth record has been found.
Samuel Jones, another son, married Sarah Barnard. He is known to have
had several children. Among them were: Hannah, Ruth, Jonathan, and Daniel.
Samuel died 3 February 1742/3 in Amesbury and is buried there.
Jonathan Jones, Robert's youngest son, married Elizabeth (surname
unknown) about 1700. He and Elizabeth were parents of Joseph, Mehitable,
Samuel, Dorothy, and others. Jonathan Jones died 22 March 1759 at Amesbury.
Robert Jones is last mentioned in records in 1710 and Joanna (Osgood)
Jones is known to have been alive in 1706. Both died at Amesbury, MA.
