John Prowse

John Prowse, born about 1645, married Hannah Barnes, daughter of William
and Rachel Barnes, about 1665. Hannah was born 25 January 1643/1644 in
Salisbury or Amesbury, MA. It is yet unknown as to who John Prowse's parents
were.

John Prowse took the Oath of Allegiance in 1677 in Amesbury and was a
member of the town "training band" (militia) in 1680. Along with Robert Jones
and others, he was appointed to lay out "peake" land in Amesbury in 1682.
This meant plotting the lots and farms for the town and out-laying areas.

It appears that John and Rachel (Barnes) Prowse spent their entire
married lives in Amesbury. We know they were married there, their children
were born there, and that they both died there.

They were the parents of Abigail, born 18 December 1666; John, born 15
February 1669; Barnes, born 2 August 1672; and Hannah, born in March 1776.

Their elder daughter, Abigail, married first Israel Diamond 5 January
1690, and second Richard Bartlett.

John, the first son, must have died young, because records refer to
Barnes, the younger son, as the eldest son of John Prowse in records filed in
1707. Hannah Barnes, the youngest child, married John Jewell 9 June
1701-1702.

Barnes Prowse, the son of John and Hannah Prowse, married Deborah
Kimball 20 January 1701/1702 in Amesbury. They were parents of two daughters:
Mary, born 26 November; and Hannah, born 29 July 1705, both in Amesburry.
Barnes Prowse is presumed to have died 4 July 1706 when Indians attacked the
town of Amesbury. About eight other Amesbury citizens were killed in that
battle. Barnes was missing from that date and his body never found. Finally
in 1715, he was declared dead and his estate was settled.

John Barnes was known to be living in 1690. His estate inventory was
filed 2 September 1706 and settled in 1707. Hannah, his wife, died in
Amesbury 27 May 1688.
